In November 2025, the WCA Help Desk was made aware of changes with WPS Health Insurance.
Since this time, they have removed the prior authorization requirement for spinal manipulation; however, medical documentation may be requested after the 8th visit to establish medical necessity.
We were also made aware that patients have been receiving letters regarding past chiropractic services. On December 5, the WCA and WPS met to discuss the 2026 policy changes. Here's what happened:
-
- Although we could not change any of WPS’s policies for 2026, we are planning an additional meeting with their clinical team.
- The WCA does not agree with the rationale used for some of the chiropractic modalities that are not covered and are on the non-covered policy for 2026.
- Policy changes for 2026 apply to both WPS Commercial and WPS Medicare Supplemental plans.
- If you treat patients with WPS insurance, make sure you review the new medical policy updates for 2026.
Billing for Services that are Not Covered:
-
- If a patient would like to receive services that are not covered, you may collect your time-of-service fee and not bill them.
- If the patient chooses to have a non-covered service billed and you do not have a contract, it is your choice if you wish to balance bill the patient for the full amount.
The WCA Insurance Advocacy Committee continues to work on your behalf, and we will update you with any changes. Contact the WPS Provider Contact Center at 800-765-4977 with any additional questions.
